summer breeze sour

I created this cocktail on World Whiskey Day last week, and happened to being feeling pretty sour about country affairs. Nothing sharp or bitter about this drink, though. It’s light, easy to drink, and just sweet enough.

Despite life taking a slight right turn into a normal direction, I don’t always feel deserving of the newfound semi-freedom. I walk about somewhat hunched still. I’m wary of the intent of others, the honesty, the justification of allowing a nudge into the world as I used to know it. We’re traveling in a few weeks and I still feel it wrong. I don’t want to sit beside anyone on the plane. I don’t want to breathe in proximity to a stranger’s air. I feel guilty for letting myself roam again.

Truthfully, I still don’t know how to integrate back into social doings. I stumbled into a new depth of introvertedness, not knowing how to go into public without feeling a threat. I hope those knots loosen up and evaporate, but it might take time, a lot of minutes and hours and days. Maybe it’s a form of survivor’s guilt. I’m not sure.

I still love Home Happy Hours. Mixology interests one end of my creative spectrum, and this Summer Breeze Sour is impeccable for hot days. It’s simple, just a few ingredients you probably have around that aren’t complicated to swipe from the store if you don’t.

Berries are bright and ripe at present, only to get better. I actually simmered a quick small batch jam to use in my cocktail, but storebought is just as nice. I recommend a brand with fewer fillers and less sugar. Jam, not jelly.

If you’re more a bourbon lover, use that in place of a typical whiskey. I daresay it picks up the pineapple flavor more. I like the lighter touch whiskey gives this cocktail, personally, but I have no qualms with a bourbon sour as well.

Whether at home or lounging with pals, give the Summer Breeze Sour some thought. I do hope most of you act responsibly given whatever parameters surround you. I’d imagine you do. Be safe and don’t huddle away unhappily if the world feels more available and you life will benefit from shedding your shell and reintroducing yourself to the outside. I’ll join you eventually.

A fresh blend of strawberry jam, pineapple, mint, and whiskey.
Prep Time 5 mins
Total Time 5 mins
Servings 1 cocktail

Ingredients
  

  • 2 tbsp strawberry jam
  • 4-5 mint leaves
  • 1/3 cup pineapple juice
  • 1 oz lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz honey (optional)
  • 2 oz whiskey
  • sparkling water, to top

Instructions
 

  • Add ice cubes to a cocktail glass.
  • In a shaker, muddle mint leaves, strawberry jam, and lemon juice. Measure in pineapple juice, honey (if using), and whiskey. Add ice and shake until cold. Strain into prepared cocktail glass and garnish with fresh strawberry slices and mint leaves.
