tampa coffee guide & brochure
Oxford Exchange exposed me first to milk art. Atop my latte the barista poured a rosetta so elaborate I wondered if she dragged a toothpick through the foam to create its four layers of dainty curves. I learned later the method of cappuccino customization in my tenure at a local shop (milk texture and muscle memory, folks) but despite the wherewithal I now possess I’m still awed by the care put into the silky patterns. The aesthetic love for latte art pulls many a camera-owner to smaller cafes. I don’t find that undesirable. Let their eyes lead them and their tongues bring them back.
I adore local shops and I adore their increasing relevance in Tampa. Anyone who visits the city, I think, must avert his eyes from the nearest Starbucks and instead wander close by for a taste of a dreamy bean roasted in the same building as the storefront which serves it. Or, leastwise, offered as a guest roast in a locally-operated hub. I comprised a brochure of six spots atop my own list of bests, generally for their menu selections but also for the personality of the brick and mortar locale. Half of them serve the mother-of-all-Tampa-roasters, Buddy Brew, from their hoppers, but each has a bonus spunk I listed in the feature box. Print the guide and carry it along, or download a virtual version to tap open when a caffeine kick beckons you outside your vehicle or hotel or house, even in this godforsaken summer sweatfest.
